5 Things to Ponder When Picking Your Creative Path

Picking a major or a program is a big decision. For students in the arts, we’re in school to hone our talents and gain the skills we’ll use every day for the rest of our lives. Which program we pick opens up exciting possibilities for the future.

At BEAU, we have several exciting, diverse paths available. From visual design to digital film, all our options lead to engaging classes and exciting careers. For creative people like ourselves, every path can seem appealing and inspiring.

In order to make the right decision for you, it’s important to consider both logical reasoning and gut instinct. If you’re planning on applying to BEAU and aren’t sure which program is right for you, here are a few things to ponder:

  1. What do you itch to work on while doing your homework or working at your day job?

Admit it – while you were plugging away at math homework, your fingers were really itching to pick up a pencil and sketch, or work on some sound editing. If you’re an adult learner, maybe you’ve been working hard at a desk but imagining you’re elsewhere. That feeling of “I’d rather be” is a good indication of what you’d like to be doing the rest of your life.

  1. When you were first deciding to apply to art school, did you have a daydream about what it would be like? What did that look like?

Chances are, you developed a fantasy from the very beginning of what going to a school like BEAU would be like, and that’s what made you decide to apply. What kind of courses did you imagine yourself doing? Did you imagine your new friends? What were they up to? Pick the program that’s most in line with what’s in your imagination.

  1. What kind of jobs do graduates have in the field you’re considering?

Ask the admissions office to put you in touch with recent graduates of the program (or programs) you’re considering. These people can give you an idea of where they’re headed after BEAU, and what kinds of paths their friends are taking. If what they’re up to sounds appealing to you, maybe you should follow their footsteps.

  1. What do your closest friends and family have to say?

Other people in your life have probably taken notice of your strengths. What sorts of things do you hear from friends and family about your creative talents? (Better yet, be honest: what do you think your parent, spouse, or best friend says about you when bragging about you to other people?) Maybe it’s time to listen to that feedback!

  1. What’s the best worst day you can imagine?

The sad truth about life is that we’re always going to have good days and bad days. But by following your passion, your “bad days” could probably be a lot better than they are now. Imagine the end of a long, hard day of work. You’re frustrated and feeling in a creative rut. What were you doing all day? Maybe that’s the passion you should pursue.
