BEAU Connects Students and Industry with Entrepreneurship Talks

Part of BEAU’s mission is to connect our students with the industry. BEAU’s Fall 2013 Entrepreneurship Talks is designed to do exactly that. The school welcomed well-known entertainment lawyer, Nicholas D. Wells, and business professional, Valerie Cameron-Walker.

Nicholas Wells of Wells IP Law, LLC talked with students about intellectual property and protecting themselves legally in the art field. Before starting his own law firm, Nicholas worked at General Electric in the trademarks and brand management department where he helped with sponsorships for Olympic athletes, the PGA Tour and NFL teams. He currently represents over 500 clients in over 50 countries, including one of the largest game companies in the world.

Valerie Cameron-Walker spoke with students about the importance of building their own brand and making a living in the entertainment industry. Valerie is an entrepreneur in every respect as she owns and operates a number of businesses. Along with starting a successful dance company, Valerie manages bands and singers while consulting other businesses on their branding. She owns Flava Entertainment and Dance Productions as a way to marry her passions of dance, music and film. If that wasn’t enough, she is also the promotions director at Cumulus Media.

Along with outlining her keys for success, Valerie left with students with a lot of practical advice. “You cannot walk into a business without a portfolio. You have to show your work and have the ‘book of you’,” remarked Cameron-Walker. “You often will find yourself in a situation where you will have to explain yourself, so be prepared for what you want to say.”

“Find a hole and fill it. Find where there is a need and fill it,” Valerie added. “You are your own brand, you can start your own business today.”
