Digital Film Degree

When you imagine things like a spaceship, a historic battle or an exotic beach, chances are the images that come to your mind are those you've seen in the media. Many aspects of our cultural identity are rooted in the films, TV shows and other forms of visual media that surround us.

Our Associate of Applied Science degree in Digital Film is for people who want a behind-the-scenes education on everything involved in visual storytelling, from previsualization to post-production.

Associate of Applied Science in Digital Film

BEAU’s Digital Film program provides students with technical, hands-on training in the entire filmmaking process. In just two short years, you can obtain the skills necessary to add your own creative genius to a wide range of visual projects, from independent films and TV shows to blockbuster movies.

Topics covered include digital camera operations, previsualization, lighting, sound, basic editing, motion graphics, visual effects, color grading, transmedia and DVD designing and authoring.

The business side of media management is a program focus as well, preparing students for entry-level positions and film production jobs such as: assistants to camera operators, sound designers, gaffers and lighting technicians, video editors, motion graphic designers, DVD designers and production developers. In addition, the general education requirements give students a well-rounded education in the areas of communication, social science, natural science and humanities.

Program Focuses

Students of BEAU’s digital film program will obtain a strong foundation of pre-production, production and post-production filmmaking. Graduates will be prepared to do the following:

  • Write scripts for short- and long-format video productions
  • Communicate script and visuals through storyboards
  • Set up sound and lighting for various types of productions
  • Comply with industry-standard digital video editing software
  • Apply motion graphics to digital video footage
  • Design and author DVD menus

  • Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Frame Forge 3D
  • Final Cut Studio 7/Final Cut Pro X
  • Visio

Digital Film - Course Highlights

Field Production and Lighting

This course covers a variety of lighting and camera techniques including color correction for digital video and television. Students apply these techniques both on location and in the studio.

Digital Video Editing FCP

Students learn basic video editing techniques using Final Cut Pro, a professional-level nonlinear editing system. Areas of study include workflow techniques, data ingestion, proper file logging and organization, transitions, effects, color correction and output to finished video.

Basic Idea Development and Storyboarding

This course covers basic idea development using scripting software and writing techniques including how to import scripts into storyboarding software. It also emphasizes basic drawing skills and shot composition while introducing students to other visual mediums, such as sequential art and animation. Students analyze the vast library of existing films as reference for effective visual storytelling techniques.

Demo Reel Production

Each student develops an individual DVD presentation of professional demo reel quality. The course covers client contact, production problem solving, the artist-client creative process and the use of various video and DVD production tools. Competency in preproduction support skills such as storyboarding, scripting, DVD testing and flow-charting is required.

Careers in Digital Film

Film experts are needed in many different sectors. Depending on the job, you may be expected to travel to film location sites and carry heavy equipment for long periods of time. By learning the art of filmmaking with a digital film degree, you can be prepared to work in a variety of film production jobs and be well on your way to landing the career of your dreams.

  • Film and video editors and Camera operators -  Film and video editors and camera operators manipulate images that entertain or inform an audience.
  • Art directors - Art directors are responsible for the visual style and images in magazines, newspapers, product packaging, and movie and television productions. They create the overall design of a project and direct others who develop artwork and layouts. 
  • Multimedia artists and animators - Multimedia artists and animators create animation and visual effects for television, movies, video games, and other forms of media.
