SLCC FanX is an opportunity for the people of Utah to come together and share their love of many things. FanX brought celebrities such as Jason Mamoa, “Weird Al” Yankovic, John Rhy-Davies, Cary Ewles and many more actors, voice actors, and artists. Not only were there panels with celebrity guests, but also with local artists, cosplayers, and entertainment and fiction enthusiasts.
Among the entertainment and fun, the floor of the convention hall was packed with people checking out the various vendor booths around the hall. There were sections for artists of all kind, clothing, trinkets, nerdy weapons like lightsabers and sonic screwdrivers, to comic book vendors and more. BEAU was able to get a booth in the sea of people, and we were able to show off student’s work and talk to everyone interested about the great opportunities we offer.
With over 50,000 people in attendance, there was a steady stream of interest in our booth. With so many artists, entertainers, creators, and even those who just appreciate the arts in all form, it was easy to connect with people coming through. Students came throughout both days and spent their time drawing and showing off demos to people about different techniques. They were able to tell people about their experiences at BEAU, what they have learned and what they are currently learning.
They were able to showcase their skills in Maya and Zbrush, Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as traditional art. Student’s 3D projects were printed out and put on display, as well as artwork from previous and current classes. Many people were complimentary of the work they saw, which is inspirational for people who hope to follow a career in the arts. Student demos and interaction with staff created a lot of interest for people.
BEAU isn’t exclusive to art and game design, but also offers a robust degree in audio engineering. We also had people showcasing work and speaking to those interested in our audio engineering program. Many in attendance said their favorite part was being able to interact with the crowd. Most people who visited the booth shared the same interests and goals as everyone at BEAU, and conversations quickly took off as experiences were shared, and interests were enjoyed.
Overall FanX was a great experience for all involved. We enjoy connecting with prospective students, as well as anyone interested or appreciative of the fields we work in. FanX and other events are great opportunities to meet with staff, students, and teachers to get the most out of learning about BEAU and what we offer. We hope to continue enjoying time being part of conventions, and hope that we get to meet more amazing people!
