5 Free Tools for Creating an Online Portfolio as a Student

BEAU online portfolio

Even if you’re just starting out on your creative career, it’s important that you start building an online presence where you can introduce yourself to the world. If you’re worried about having a professional looking website on a student budget, don’t worry! There are free services that exist that can help you get set up fast with a portfolio that will help you network and get your name out there like a pro.

Behance: Behance is the leading online platform for creatives to showcase their visual work. Behance has elements of a social network to it, which allow you to easily connect with other creative minds and network online. It’s also a site where people looking to hire creative professionals often browse, so it’s a great place for your work to be seen.

Carbonmade: Carbonmade is a straightforward, stripped-down service, but it can be an easy place to start building a portfolio for free. If you’re nervous about creating a presence on the web, and worried that you don’t know things like HTML, this might be a good place for you to start.

Dunked: Like Carbonmade, Dunked is a free, simple portfolio website that doesn’t require you to know any HTML or other website-building knowledge. It has numerous, mobile-optimized templates to choose from that make building a portfolio quick and easy.

Flickr: Although known as a photo-sharing site, Flickr is a tool that can be used to host all visual work. Like Behance, its social aspects, including commenting and groups, make it a great place for your work to be discovered. Sharing to your own social media accounts from Flickr is also easy, which makes it a breeze to promote your work.

Instagram: Chances are, you’re already using Instagram for fun, so if creating a formal portfolio still feels intimidating to you, maybe creating an Instagram account is the place for you to start. Make sure to set up a dedicated professional account. Follow other creatives, and use your professional account as a networking tool for connecting and engaging with peers and potential clients.

If you’re a student putting together your first portfolio, start out picking one of these platforms and upload high-resolution versions of your best work. If you aren’t sure what constitutes your best work, ask a classmate, friend, or mentor who you can trust to give you honest feedback. It’s better to start with a small selection of stellar work than a larger selection of lesser work!
