Jaimie Myer has always had a love for painting, printmaking and old-school design techniques. Now, she’s using her creativity to earn a degree in graphic design from Broadview Entertainment Arts University (BEAU).
“Design is a way of solving problems and communicating,” says Jaimie. “BEAU is great because it’s an art-specific school, so everyone that attends here, regardless of their interest in specific programs, has a love for art and creativity.”
It’s not just about creativity for Jaimie, though. She says she’s learning the skills it takes to turn her passion into a career.
“The graphic design program really gets you ready for real-world experience in designing in the industry,” she says. “You become stronger conceptually, which I feel like is missed in a lot of graphic design programs in other universities.”
Hands-on experience has been crucial to Jaimie’s education, and she appreciates the applied-learning opportunities she gets every day that help her create a strong portfolio.
“There’s internships, and we’ve also had actual clients come into the classroom, and we’ve created designs for them,” explains Jaimie. “That’s already real-world experience right there that they’re implementing into the classrooms.”
Jaimie says she can already see the strides she’s made throughout her educational experience and will continue to make after graduation.
“Now I’m finally to the point with my skills to where I can integrate my first love, like painting and wood cuts, into the digital realm and make them mesh together really well,” she says. “I finally established a style of my own, so I’m really seeing myself excel from this point.”
