Newest Audio Teacher Brings Experience & Advice

music production, BEAU, Salt Lake City, Utah Broadview Entertainment Arts University’s newest music production teacher has been living and breathing the music scene since he can remember. What started out as recording his parent’s music when he was twelve has turned into a labor of love. Mateo Coletti received a degree in the recording arts and sciences, shortly after graduation he opened up a personal studio in Oklahoma.

After recording some bands, Mateo moved back to his native Utah and began working for music studios and post production houses. After just two years, he had worked with 18 studios in the state and had been involved with sound design and music for games, commercials, movies and albums.

“The room for potential and growth is amazing, I love the industry,” says Coletti. “Because I had the drive for expansion in this field as a priority, I was able to push through the hard times.”

Traveling around the country and Mexico is now giving Mateo a perspective on the industry that he hopes will benefit newcomers to the field.

“At the beginning of your career, you need to be humble and be a little mouse in the corner taking in everything you can,” stresses Coletti. “Read manuals, study, and always look for the opportunity to step in and fill a spot. It’s always about getting your foot in the door and getting that first break.”

Aside from being prepared, success will come down to your persona and your connections. “Your work is your calling card. In the recording industry, your image will follow you. Don’t ever go to a client that you don’t personally believe in. At the beginning of your career, you’ll spend more time critiquing things than anything else.”

“Also, network, network, network. 90% of the gigs I got were because of the people I met.”

As for why this accomplished professional is sticking around the Salt Lake City area all comes down to the city’s future.

“To be honest, Salt Lake City has one of the best underground scenes in the nation. I have high hopes that Salt Lake will end up being a secondary market,” added Coletti. “This place will be a secondary market here soon. We have huge bands coming out of Utah because the talent here is unbelievable.”
